assignment #8 – Marginalize and Exploit Essay

Second of all , the people with power in this situaiton the FHA and they are marginalizing black people because they are giving a low grade or bad rating for the neighborhood black people live in. To Marginalize someone is to push of to the side and make less important so the FHA was pushing the black people neighborhood off to the side and/or making it less important. To Exploit someone means to take unfair advantage of someone for your own benefit. The FHA are exploiting people because they want people to spend lots of money on a not cheap house in a more desirable to live in area. So when people buy the not cheap houses the FHA gets more money.

Assignment #7

  • Did you receive any comments to your blog?  If so, from whom?  What did they say?
  • Yes I did receive comments on my blog , I received two comments.
  • One of the comments came from a girl named Melody at Life Academy , and the other comment was from a Beto I don’t know what school he attends to.
  • Beto Said:
    Dear Dae Len,
I am intrigued by your post “Assignment #5” because my class has also learned about dominant and counter narratives. We learned how they tear communities, friendships, and people apart because when comments like dominant narratives are made they hit a soft spot for people of color mostly. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is “Another Picture I Want To Use Is A Picture Of Me With My Familly (My Mom Brother And Sisters) And That Is Because People Say Black People Are Stengy And Selfish And Only Care About Themselves , And I Wanted To Use The Picture To Say That I Am All About My Family Especially My Mom And My Sister Jai’Lynn Because We Have Been Threw So Much Together. When Nobody Else Had Our Back We Had Each Other.” I think this stands out because not a lot of people are selfless and care for others, sometimes people are selfish and don’t care but you don’t you care about your family and that is a good characteristic. I also care a lot about my family because they’re the only ones you have no matter what, they will be there with you in any situation. Your post reminds me of something that happened to me. One time I joined a basketball AAU team and people would look at me like what the heck is a Mexican doing here. I felt really embarrassed but I used that to hype me up and I played center and got a lot of rebounds for my team and started fast breaks for them to. That will never leave my mind people doubting me playing basketball because I am Mexican, thanks to that I am a great basketball player now and better than ever. Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because the world needs more people that are selfless and see the world differently than others like you. Your work has helped me understand more about the effects of dominant and counter narratives and I am thankful for that keep working

Melody Said:

Assignment #5

Basically Identity Is The Way A Person Describes Themselves By The Way They Look Or The Way They Identify Themselves By Who Their Parents Are.
A Dominant Narrative Is When Someone Talks About You But Isn’t Stating The Truth, They Talk About You As If You Were Like Everyone Else That Looks Like You. For Example Someone Asked Me , Your Tall , Do You Play Basketball?
A Counter Narrative Is Basically What You Have To Say About Yourself Or Your Side Of A Story. I Think It Is Important Because If You Don’t It Really Can Mess Up Your Reputation As Your Own Person All Together Because You Can Be Chinese And Someone Can Say “Oh Your Chinese , You Eat Ducks And Cats. And No One Wants To Be Judged Because Of Something That Someone With The Same Nationality Has Done.
First Of All , A Dominant Narrative Is A Story That People In A Position Of Priviledge Tell About Someone Who Is Not. They [Dominant Narratives] Connects To Me Personally Because People Have Said Rude And Incorrect Things About Me Because Of People With The Same Race As Me Has Done Something Bad Or Just The Wrong Thing So People Try To Say I Do The Same Thing. I Wanted To Use A Picture Of Me When I Had Two BasketBalls In My Hand And A Lot Of Metals On My Neck To Show That I Am Black… But I Don’t Want To Be In The Streets Or Go To Parties And Do Dumb Stuff , I Want To Make It To The Nba And Get My Family Out Of Oakland. Another Picture I Want To Use Is A Picture Of Me With My Familly (My Mom Brother And Sisters) And That Is Because People Say Black People Are Stengy And Selfish And Only Care About Themselves , And I Wanted To Use The Picture To Say That I Am All About My Family Especially My Mom And My Sister Jai’Lynn Because We Have Been Threw So Much Together. When Nobody Else Had Our Back We Had Each Other.

First of all counter narratives have to do with me because they are basically my response or my story about myself because no one knows the truth about your life accept for you. I used a picture of me with metals on my neck and two basketballs in my hand. And That explains that I am not one of the black kids that goes to parties and get high or get drunk or in the streets , I want to do something good with my life. I used a picture of my family and I all together , and that explains that I am not stingy or selfish , that i want to make my brothers , sisters , and my mom proud. To begin with identity involves me because I identify myself black/ african american but i don’t like when people compare me to other black people so your identity basically involves me because thats how i tell people my life or how I describe myself. I want to use a picture that says basically all black people aren’t the same. This has something to do with me because sometimes I wish I could change my skin color because I don’t wanna be black when i hear that a black person has done something dumb and then people just automatically think every black person does the same thing. I Want to use a picture of oakland but like the dirtiest part of oakland because thats what people say is ”the home of black people”. That is to explain that that is not true because i dont even live in a black or dirty neighborhood , I live in the hills by skyline and it is no black people or no where near dirty.
